A Mediterranean Adventure

From Costa Smeralda to the Maddalena Islands
I recently had the opportunity to spend 10 days in Sardinia, the north, to be exact, both the east and the west, including the Maddalena Islands. Sardinia had been on my bucket list for so long, so I finally made the time, and off I went.
Well, it didn’t disappoint. Costa Smeralda, on the northeastern side of the island, with its pristine beaches and luxurious resorts, lived up to my daydreams. In fact, for a bit of fun – and a challenge to myself – I went beach-hopping just to see which beach I liked best.
Honestly, there was no clear winner as they were ALL beautiful. Of course, I enjoyed the classic stop, Porto Cervo with its famous port, clear turquoise waters and vibrant nightlife. But I also discovered a plethora of other activities, including many water activities, archeological sites, the Blue Zone and fantastic wineries.

Exploring Sardinia Beyond the Beaches
Maddalena Island, off the coast of Sardinia. Ideal for snorkelling, hiking, and observing diverse marine life in its protected national park, it was truly beautiful. The island of Caprera was very emotional for me. I had the chance to visit the home and tomb of Giuseppe Garibaldi. Garibaldi was one of the founding fathers of Italy’s unification; he was also a leading political and military figure and a hero beloved by many, including my father-in-law, who recently passed away. Dad would have been so thrilled.
We then headed to the northwest of Sardinia, where we found a different ambiance in Alghero, with its Catalan influence, as well as the super-charming town of Stintino. This little town is on the very northwestern tip of the island and only minutes away from the famed La Pelosa beach. This quickly became my favourite beach. Each time I looked at the water, I saw new and different hues of blues and greens. It completely took my breath away.
In the end, was Sardinia worth adding to my bucket list? Absolutely. And I can’t wait for the return trip.
